Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in Women

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in Women ptsd

Women, Trauma, and PTSD

Injury is not unusual in girls; five from ten women experience a traumatic event. Girls often experience different traumas than guys. While men and women report the exact same symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (hyperarousal, reexperiencing, avoidance, and numbing), some signs are somewhat more normal for women or men.

History

Many early info on posttraumatic stress disorder and injury originated from studies of men Veterans, largely Vietnam Veterans. Researchers found that females reactions were not dissimilar to male combat Veterans and started to examine the consequences of sexual assault. Posttraumatic stress disorder can be also caused by women’s experiences of injury.

Of experiencing injury risk

Findings from a nationwide mental health study that is sizable show that a bit more than half of all women will experience at least one traumatic event in their own life. Women are marginally less likely to have injury than men. The most common injury for girls is sexual assault or child sexual abuse. About one in three girls will experience a sexual assault in their own lifetime. Rates of sexual assault are higher for girls than guys. Girls will also be prone to encounter domestic violence or mistreated in youth, to be neglected, or to have a family member suddenly die.

What goes on after trauma

Following an injury, some women start drinking or using drugs, might feel depressed, or develop post-traumatic stress disorder. Women are a lot more than two times as prone to develop PTSD than men (10% for women and 4% for men). There are a few reasons women Understand Complex Trauma may get PTSD more than guys:

Women are somewhat more likely to experience sexual attack.

Sexual assault is less unlikely to cause PTSD than a number of additional events.

Women may be more inclined to blame themselves for trauma experiences than men.

Why are some girls at higher risk for posttraumatic stress disorder?

Maybe not all women who experience a traumatic occasion develop posttraumatic stress disorder. Women are far more likely to develop PTSD if they:

Have a past mental-health issue (for example depression or stress)

Experienced an extremely severe or life threatening trauma

Were attacked

Were hurt throughout the event

Had a serious reaction at that time of the event

Experienced other events that were stressful afterwards

Do not have great support that is social

What PTSD is like for girls

Some symptoms are far more common in girls than men. Women are somewhat more prone to have more trouble feeling emotions, to be jumpy, and also to anxiety avoid things that remind them of the trauma than guys. Men are far more likely to have difficulty controlling their anger then girls and to feel angry. Women with post-traumatic stress disorder are more likely to feel apprehensive and depressed, while men with post-traumatic stress disorder are prone to get problems with alcohol or substances. Both men and women who experience PTSD may develop health conditions that are physical.

Women in the military

Women in the armed forces are at high risk for exposure to events that are traumatic, particularly during times of post traumatic stress disorder warfare. Currently, about 1-5% of military personnel in Iraq are women. Although men are more likely to have battle, an increasing number of women are actually being exposed to combat. Girls in the armed services are at higher danger of sexual assault than guys or exposure to sexual harassment. Potential studies are needed to better understand the ramifications of women’s contact with both combat and sexual assault.

Treatment for PTSD

There are excellent treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder. Nevertheless, not everyone who experiences a trauma seeks remedy. Girls may be more likely than men to get help after a distressing event. At least one study found that women react to treatment as well as or better than guys. This may be because girls are usually more comfortable discussing feelings and discussing private matters with others than men.
